We strive to raise awareness and help fund local charities to improve the lives of others. Through running we will build a community that sees the strength in all humans and supports their needs.
Our history begins in 2006 when a group of runners and friends who shared a common belief that many worthy charities in Connecticut were in need of support made a decision to do something about it. Our philosophy is twofold: we strive to provide runners with the tools necessary to complete races and we want to give back to the community.
Team MAD (Making a Difference) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was formed by a group of dedicated people in 2006. As a team, we have historically assisted runners and non-runners to be able to complete a full or half marathon while raising money for our annually designated charity. Our goal is to support local Connecticut charities in reaching their full potential while providing a safe and memorable experience for our runners. Our annual running event was the Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon up until 2017 when we created The Steam Train Half Marathon and Relay. We have handed the race off to Community Health Resources and will return to being runners this year.
Over the years we have raised nearly $250,000 for local charities including St. Francis Hospital Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Run for The Fallen, House of Heroes and others. We have done this despite being a 100% volunteer organization with a minimal operating budget. We accomplished these results by having dedicated runners who reached out to friends, family, and co-workers asking for donations for running their race. Those donations are then given directly to the charities. Team MAD does not make a profit and all of our operating expenses are paid for through separate fundraising efforts such as bingo.
