Team M.A.D. was formed by an ad hoc group of dedicated people in 2006 and is a 501(c)(3)! For the past decade, we trained runners and non-runners to be able to complete a half marathon (13.1 miles) or a full marathon (26.2 miles) while raising money for our annually designated charity. Our mission is to support local charities in reaching their full potential while providing a safe and memorable experience for our runners.
Over the years we have raised nearly $200,000 for local charities including St. Francis Hospital Newborn Intensive Care Unit, OutRun 38, Knox, Crayons for Cancer, House of Heroes and others. We have done this despite being a 100% volunteer organization with a minimal operating budget. We accomplished these results by having dedicated runners who reached out to friends, family and co-workers for donations for their race which were given directly to the charities. Team MAD does not make a profit and all of our operating expenses are paid for through fundraising efforts such as bingo.
After the 2016 Hartford Marathon we decided to go a different route to enable us to make a larger donation to the beneficiary and hosted the inaugural Steam Train Half Marathon & Relay. Despite not generating a significant amount of sponsorship and being a new race we were able to present a check for $10,000 to the beneficiary. We are hopeful that this year we can generate more financial sponsors and get more of our race day needs such as traffic cones, food for runners and printing services at reduced costs or even donated.
